Allada Karmava – Ugabhoga – Purandaradasa

Allada Karmava Aacharisidava ketta| Ellarolu virodhisuva ketta|

Ballidavarodane Senasaaduvava ketta| Lalle Maatina satiya Nambidava ketta|

Phullanaabhana namma Purandaravitthalana Melladi Nambadava ketta NaragEedi|

Here Purandaradasa elaborates what one should avoid doing in life.

A person who performs actions which are prohibited (allada Karma) will only be ruining his own life. Similarly, one who constantly accuses, opposes and goes against all others (ellaranu virodhisuva) for no rhyme or reason; one who argues indiscriminately with the learned and the wise (ballidava), one who trusts a virtue-less lady  — they all end up suffering in life..

Finally Purandaradasa concludes by saying that – One who does not have faith and devotion (nambadava) in Lord  Purandara Vitala will have to go through endless suffering all his life (Naraka).

Ni Chittamu Nischalamu – Dhanyasi – Tyagaraja

“Guru” – teacher, remover of ignorance, one represents the Trinity (Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva) and who is even beyond them – the Parabrahma.

Who is a Guru? In this composition, Saint Tyagaraja described two qualities of a Guru. One whose mind is NISHCHALA (One who is not disturbed by the ongoings of worldly issues and whose mind is calm under all circumstances) and NIRMALA (Pure – One who is devoid of the six inner enemies – Kaama, Krodha, Lobha, Moha, Mada, Matsarya).  He indeed is qualified to be a Guru.

Tyagaraja attributes these qualities  to none other than Lord Raama . Tyagaraja is now a disciple of Lord Raama. As a disciple, he tells his Guru (Lord Raama), that his mind which is immersed in the worldly matters is disturbed and agitated. It knows no peace. Hence the Saint seeks the grace of the Lord to help him to reclaim his mind.

It is only a Guru who purifies the mind like a Sallaki Seed (guruvu cillaginca) which purifies the water by removing the mud. The Guru is like the Bee or the Wasp (guruvE bhramaramu) who transforms the disciple and guides him to his own State of Perfection. The Guru is the Sun (guruDE bhAskaruDu) who dispels the darkness of spiritual ignorance from the student and leads him unto the Light of Spiritual Knowledge. Guru himself represents the ultimate (the highest truth) to be realised and attained. Tyagaraja concludes by surrendering himself to the Lord who indeed is the Guru of all gurus – the Sole Protector of the world.

It is noteworthy that Tyagaraja has composed this kriti in Dhanyasi – a raaga most suited for emoting Bhakti Bhava

Nin_nantha Swami Enage Untu – Purandaradasa

Ni_nantha Swami Enage Untu | Ninagilla|| Ni_nantha Tandeyu Enage Untu | Ninagilla||

Ni_nantha Doreyu  Enage Untu | Ninagilla|| Neene Paradeshi Naane Swadeshi|

Ninnarasi Lakumi Enna Taayi| Ninna Taaya To_ro Purandaravithala||

This ia a unique composition of Saint Purandaradasa! The Saint makes a comparision as to who is more fortunate – the Bhakta (devotee) or Bhagavan (the Lord)!! Purandaradasa says that a devotee indeed has Lord Narayana himself as his:

1) Swami (Lord or in today’s terms Boss),

2) Father,

3) and King.

“Oh Lord!! Do you have a Master, a Father, or a King who would indeed look after your needs. Do you have a mother!!??”

“As a devotee , I am indeed fortunate to have you as my Sarvasva (my-all-in-all) . You being the Lord, yet you have none!!”

Here Purandaradasa points out that a devotee is never alone. When a devotee invokes and seeks the help of Lord, the Lord readily comes forward to protect his devotee as a Father, Mother, King and so on….

How fortunate a Bhakta is to have the Lord with him ….!!

Tanuvemba – Ugabhoga .

Tanuvemba Dodda Doniyalli | Hari Naamavemba bandava Tumbi| Vyavahaaravannu Maaduvenayya|

Indriyagalemba Sunkavu Addavaagalu | Mukundana Mudreyannu Toeri| Holeya Daatuvenayya|

Purandara Vittalanallige Pogi | Mukuti Sukhavemba Laabhagalisuvenayya|

Here Purandaradasa gives a simple solution for all problems one faces in life. He compares the human body[tanu] to a boat [ doni ] which has to cross the ocean of samsaara to attain Salvation. For this to happen one needs to perform all actions in this world [vyavahaara] as an offering unto the Lord. On this journey, the mind will indeed get tempted with the worldly pleasures [Indriya Sukha]. But one should  overcome the worldly temptations by taking to the Lord’s [Mukunda] name and Mudre[Symbol of Support]. With Hari Naama as a Sceptre one can easily cross the ocean of Samsaara and attain Mukti [Permanant Bliss!]
