Guruvayoor Sri Krishna

Lord Brahma started his work of creation by first invoking Lord Vishnu. The Lord appeared before the creator and gave him an idol of himself having four arms carrying the shankha, chakra, gada and padma. Lord Vishnu told him that the idol was purna (full) manifestation of His divinity and therefore it signified “shuddha sattva”. Pure or Shuddha Sattva is the nascent state of Sattva which is extremely subtle and cannot become gross. However, this “murthi” or idol which represents Shuddha Sattva is an exception! Brahma worshipped the idol with great fervour. 

King Sutapas and his wife Prisni, who belonged to the Satya Yuga were ardent devotees of Lord Vishnu and they undertook rigorous tapas. Pleased with their devotion and austerity, Lord Brahma gave them this divine idol. They worshipped the idol of Lord Vishnu for a number of years. When Vishnu manifested himself in front of them and asked them what boon they wanted, they said, “we want a son like you, a son like you, a son like you.” The Lord replied that there cannot be anyone like him, and therefore he himself will be born as their son and since they repeated the request three times, he would be born three times at three different periods of time, in three different manifestations. 

In their present manifestation as Sutapas and Prisni, in the Satya Yuga, the Lord was born as Prisnigarbha. In Treta Yuga, in their second manifestation as Sage Kashyapa and Aditi, the Lord was born as Vamana. In Dwapara Yuga, in their third manifestation as Vasudeva and Devaki, the Lord was born as Sri Krishna. In all their manifestations, they worshipped the idol that Lord Brahma had given them. The idol was installed in Dwaraka, and even Krishna worshipped the idol of Lord Vishnu. At the end of the Dwapara Yuga, during the dissolution, Krishna entrusted the safety of the idol with Uddhava, his devotee. Krishna asked Uddhava to take the help of Brihaspati, the Guru of the devatas and Vayu, the wind-God to install the idol in an appropriate place. The Lord folded up his manifestation and Dwaraka was submerged in the deluge waters. 

Uddhava invoked Deva-guru and Vayu. They both appeared and as instructed by Lord Krishna carried the idol with them and went in search of an appropriate place to install it. They reached Bhargava-kshetra (Kerala) and saw a beautiful lake full of lotuses. The place looked most appropriate for the installation of the idol. This was the place where Lord Shiva had performed tapas and the lake was known as Rudra teertha. On seeing Brihaspati and Vayu, Lord Shiva and Parvati appeared there and suggested that this was the most suitable place for the installation of the Lord’s idol. The divine architect, Vishwakarma was assigned the work of constructing a beautiful temple for the Lord. According to legend, the uniqueness of the temple originally constructed by Vishwakarma is that on Vishu (summer equinox) day, the sun’s rays enter the temple and fall on the Lord’s feet. Traditionally it is believed that the “pratishta” of the Lord’s idol was performed on the auspicious Guruvayur Ekadashi. Since Brihaspati (Guru) and Vayu were involved in the installation of the idol of the Lord, the sacred place was called as Guru-Vayu-Pura, and the Lord as Guruvayurappan. Guruvayur is also known as Bhuloka Vaikunta. 

Lord Guruvayurappan gave darshan to Sri Adi Shankaracharya when he visited this sacred place. He composed the beautiful Govinda Ashtakam in praise of the Lord and laid down the procedures for the various daily rituals to be carried out in the temple which are followed till today.

Lord Rama answers a Britisher’s Prayer!

Madurantakam is a small town in Tamilnadu which has one of the oldest temples dedicated to Lord Sri Rama constructed by the Chola kings. There is also a huge lake or tank measuring 13 square miles and 21 feet deep also built by the Chola kings. From 1795-1799, a British officer by name Colonel Lionel Blaze was the collector who was in charge of Madurantakam. During this time he saw the tank breach twice and create havoc. He therefore decided to camp at Madurantakam and construct a strong bund to the lake to save the people and the agricultural land. 

Lionel Blaze saw a large number of granite stones near the temple and decided to use them for the tank bund. But the priests of the temple told him that they were for the extension of the temple complex. He ridiculed them saying that it was much better to use the stones for the bund rather than for the temple. He asked them, “Will your Rama come and protect the tank from breaching?” He had made up his mind that the granite stones would be used for protecting the tank.

One night it rained very heavily. The waters in the tank were continuously rising. When Lionel Blaze was apprised of the grave situation, he immediately went and camped near the tank praying and hoping that the tank would not breach. But the waters were continuously rising. At that moment, in utter desperation, he surrendered to the Lord and prayed that if the Lord saved the tank from breaching, he himself would build a temple for the Lord. He looked up to the skies helplessly. There in the lightning-flash he saw two handsome and charming youngsters with bow and arrows standing on the tank bund guarding the tank! The rains mysteriously subsided. The tank was full and almost overflowing, but it did not breach! The people and the fields were saved. Lionel was sure that the two youngsters who were on guard were none other than Lord Rama and Lakshmana.

As a mark of his gratitude and as he had promised, Collector Lionel Blaze constructed the temple. The Collector’s name is inscribed as a benefactor in the temple and the Lord is known as ERI KATHA RAMA – “Rama who saved the tank!”

Madurantakam is also the sacred place where Sri Ramanujacharya was initiated by his Guru Periya Nambi. It also houses one of the most well known Sri Ahobila Math Sanskrita Patasala.

Deepavali: Festival of Lights

KARTIKA MAASA heralds the onset of winter with shorter days and longer nights. The light and heat from the sun which depends on the inclination of the sun’s rays and the consequent energy that we receive is completely different from that which we receive in summer. Due to the cold climatic conditions, growth is less and stunted in Nature. As in Nature, so in our minds, because Nature is only an extension of our minds. To counter the ‘abundancy of darkness’, we bring in LIGHT, within and without. This is known as DEEPAVALI. When rows of lamps are lit, there is light, warmth and a conducive positive energy field. Similarly, the tamas, inertia and lethargy in our minds is dispelled by bringing in the Light of Knowledge within ourselves by the study of the scriptures. 

When a lamp is lit, the Light not only illuminates the lamp but it lightens up the entire surroundings. By keeping the lighted lamps at the threshold, there is illumination inside and outside the house. Lighting the lamp outside signifies lighting of the Lamp of Knowledge within ourselves. With the Light of Knowledge within oneself, not only are we benefited, but all those around us are also benefited. The Knowledge helps the inner subtle equipments – the mind and intellect to perform brilliantly and also helps the outer gross physical body to accomplish efficiently.

It is only with the Light of Knowledge, that one can discriminate between the right and wrong, the true and false, the permanent and impermanent, between dharma and adharma. Hence the whole month of Kartika wherein we light lamps daily signifies the “invoking of the Light of Spiritual Knowledge” within ourselves, and subsequently exercising the “faculty of discrimination” (Viveka) in us to walk the path of Dhyana or Meditation.

Significance of Deepa: There are several interpretations:

Each one of us is a WALKING LAMP (Deepa). The “body” made up of Matter represents the EARTHEN LAMP. The “mind” which is nothing but a flow of thoughts represents the OIL. The “intellect” is the WICK. The BRIGHT FLAME represents the “Light of Spiritual Knowledge” – the SAT-CHIT-ANANDA, the Lord Himself,

OR, the MIND represents the vessel or the “lamp”. DEVOTION is the “oil”. FAITH is the “wick”. KNOWLEDGE is the golden “flame”,

OR, the “earthen lamp” represents the PHYSICAL BODY. The “wick” is the MIND. The “oil” is the VASANAS. The “flame” signifies the Light of SPIRITUAL KNOWLEDGE which helps to exhaust the vasanas. When the vasanas are exhausted, the flame merges with the elemental Fire which signifies the merger of the jivatma with Paramatma. Hence the importance of LIGHTING THE LAMP !!

The FLAME of the lamp which is brilliant and golden represents the “brilliance of the Knowledge” acquired by an individual. The flame always points upward. Similarly, our life should always be progressive – one should move forward as well as higher on the path of spirituality. The entire conical flame that we perceive is made up of innumerable minute flame-lets clustered together. The total vibrational frequency of all the flame-lets gives the appearance of ONE WHOLE SINGLE flame. Though there is so much of plurality, multiplicity and diversity in the world of things and beings, one should learn to recognise the ONENESS behind them all. This is possible only with the brilliant Light of Spiritual Knowledge. The flame of the lamp does not flutter but remains absolutely still and steady when there is no cross-breeze. Similarly, a mind which is not persecuted by the winds of passion, anger, greed etc., remains single-pointed, steady and balanced.

A LIGHTED LAMP bestows immense benefits upon us. The material with which the lamp is made up of, whether mud or metal, the oil which is used, and the material with which the wick is made up of contribute greatly and immensely to our personality. One can feel the presence of something Higher and Diviner by just holding a lighted lamp in our hands in a dark environment – TOUCH THERAPY. The golden flame helps in focusing and concentration and also helps in lifting the mind to higher levels – VISUAL THERAPY. The fragrance of the oil or ghee which is used in the lamp makes the mind calm and serene. It also pervades the entire environment and purifies it with its positive energy – AROMA THERAPY. There is a sense of deep tranquility in the stillness and silence that emanates from the lighted lamp and pervades the entire surroundings – AUDIO THERAPY. Just by being there, the lighted lamp serves one and all – perfect KARMA YOGA – an experience so enriching and fulfilling – RASA THERAPY (RASAVATH).

Ramadasu restores temple at Bhadrachala!

Kancherla Gopanna, who later came to be known as Bhadrachala Ramadasu because of his immense faith and extraordinary devotion to Lord Rama was a native of Nelakondapalli in Andhra Pradesh. He belonged to the 17th century. His uncles Akkanna and Madanna held very high administrative positions in the Kingdom of Tana Shah of the Qutub Shahi Sultan dynasty. Because of their influence, Gopanna became the Tahsildar (revenue tax collector) of Polvancha. He went about his work very sincerely and endeared himself to all the people.

Once he happened to visit Bhadrachalam for a religious fair and was pained to see the dilapidated condition of Seetaramaswamy temple there. A unique temple dating back to the pauranic age where the Sage Bhadra did severe penance to propitiate Lord Rama. His desire was to carry the Lord on his head and therefore he became the Bhadragiri hill on which stands the temple of Sri Rama.

Gopanna decided to restore back the temple to its original glory. People donated large amounts for the temple. As the work was going on, they fell short of funds. The people urged him to spend the money from the revenue collected, promising to raise the amount over a period of time and reimburse it back soon. The temple was rebuilt. Orders were also placed for beautiful golden ornaments made of pearls and gems for Lord Rama, Seeta and Lakshmana. The procedure for conducting poojas and utsavas were all laid out. Because of his extreme devotion and dedication to Lord Rama, everybody around started addressing Gopanna as Ramadasu, the sevak of Lord Rama.

Some people who were jealous of Ramadasu went and complained to King Tana Shah about the money collected as tax being used for the temple building. Ramadasu pleaded innocence saying the money had been used only for the temple which is also for the public. But the angry Shah would not listen. He wanted the money back and till accounts were settled, he had Ramadasu put behind the bars. 12-13 years Ramadasu was in jail. In the prison he was very badly treated. All the pain and torture only reinforced his faith and devotion to the Lord of his heart – Sri Rama. He composed beautiful krithis on the Lord. And there are some emotional ones in which he asks Mother Seeta to intervene and put in a word in his favour to the Lord! And he has used the unique style called: “Ninda Stuti”, wherein the composer addresses the Lord in an angry tone and even mocks Him for not helping him! 

After about 12-13 years, one day in the middle of the night, two young handsome youth calling themselves Ramoji and Lakshmoji carrying bow and arrows, appeared in the bed-chambers of King Tana Shah. The Shah was shocked to see them in his inner chambers! They introduced themselves as having been sent by Ramadasu to settle the accounts. They handed over to him a bag full of gold coins. It was just the right amount that had been used up from the state coffers. They demanded a receipt for the same along with a note for the release of Ramadasu from the prison, which the King gave. They both collected the receipt, showed it to the prison-in-charge and got Ramadasu released. By the time Ramadasu could realize what had happened, Ramoji and Lakshmoji had disappeared. 

On enquiring, Ramadasu told the king that he had not sent anyone nor any money. On checking back, the king saw the seal of Sri Rama on the coins. Now they knew — it was Sri Rama and Lakshmana who had come in disguise. The Shah was fortunate to have had the darshan of the Lord! He was overwhelmed and sought forgiveness from Ramadasu for imprisoning him. Ramadasu on the other side pleaded with the Lord for a glimpse of His divine form. The Lord accompanied by Mother Janaki gave him darshan along with the assurance of mukti at the end of his life. King Tana Shah on behalf of the State, handed over the entire amount to the temple. Even to this day, on the auspicious Sri Rama Navami, when Sri Seetarama Kalyanotsava is performed in Bhadrachala temple, it is the practice of the State Government to offer gifts to the divine couple — Sri Rama and Sita — an honour and fortune, and indeed a blessing for the State and its people!
